Teens Driving to School This Year? Set the “Rules of the Road”

By San Diego Car Accident Lawyer on September 4, 2013 - Comments off

Teen drivers face one of the highest rates of car accident injury and death of any group of drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If your teen will be driving to school, after-school activities, work, or other destinations this school year, you can help reduce his or her risk of injury by setting some “rules of the road.” The rules should address the major causes of teen driver accidents and be reinforced by clear consequences. Some key points to include in the rules are:

  • Always wear a seat belt. Seat belts are the best line of protection against injury in a wide variety of accidents. Require your teen and any passengers your teen transports to wear a seat belt every time.
  • Put down the phone. Many states, including California, ban the use of handheld cell phones or texting while behind the wheel. Require teens to put down their cell phones and focus on the task of driving. Teach teens that if they must make or receive a call, they should pull over and park in a safe place first.
  • Avoid distraction. Cell phones are a notorious cause of driving distraction, but they aren’t the only one. Teach teens that their first responsibility is to watch the road. Make sure they know to turn the radio down, limit the number of passengers, and avoid eating behind the wheel to improve focus and reduce distraction.
