Teens Driving to School This Year? Set the “Rules of the Road”

By San Diego Car Accident Lawyer on September 4, 2013 - Comments off

Teen drivers face one of the highest rates of car accident injury and death of any group of drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If your teen will be driving to school, after-school activities, work, or other destinations this school year, you can help reduce his or her risk of injury by setting some “rules of the road.” The rules should address the major causes of teen driver accidents and be reinforced by clear consequences. Some key points to include in the rules are:

  • Always wear a seat belt. Seat belts are the best line of protection against injury in a wide variety of accidents. Require your teen and any passengers your teen transports to wear a seat belt every time.
  • Put down the phone. Many states, including California, ban the use of handheld cell phones or texting while behind the wheel. Require teens to put down their cell phones and focus on the task of driving. Teach teens that if they must make or receive a call, they should pull over and park in a safe place first. » Read More

Will New NHTSA Guidelines Make Driving Less Safe?

By San Diego Car Accident Lawyer on July 1, 2013 - Comments off

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is responsible for creating and implementing a wide range of rules that affect vehicle and driver safety, so when the agency proposes a new rule, experienced car accident lawyers tend to take note. However, some are saying that the NHTSA’s latest proposed rule might actually make drivers and their passengers less safe.

At issue is a rule that would limit the features of in-vehicle infotainment systems that drivers could access when the vehicle is in gear, even if it is not moving. The agency’s goal is to limit driver distraction by eliminating access to features like showing album artwork when a particular song is playing — things that aren’t necessary to operate the vehicle or to navigate and that might distract a driver at a crucial moment, resulting in an accident. » Read More

San Diego Mayor Ends Red Light Camera Enforcement

By San Diego Car Accident Lawyer on February 6, 2013 - Comments off

On Friday, Mayor Bob Filner made an announcement at a news conference near the West Grape Street and North Harbor Drive intersection that he has decided to take down 21 red-light cameras in the city of San Diego.
After the announcement, a group of workers immediately began taking down the “Photo Enforced” sign on the Grape and Harbor intersection and continued to take other signs down throughout San Diego.
According to the mayor’s statement, there is no proof that the red-light camera program decreases accidents or increases safety in any way. The San Diego Police Department and California accident database showed that there had not been an accident at that particular intersection since 2001.
It was also reported that the main group ticketed on Grape and Harbor were tourists. Red-light violation tickets may prevent visitors from coming to San Diego again and the mayor explained that San Diego should not welcome visitors with a $500 fine.
