NHTSA Makes Changes to Vehicle Recall Notices

San Diego Auto Product LiabilityThe lawyers at the Jurewitz Law Group learned that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that automakers will have one year to change the way they share recall information with affected motorists, according to a recent article in Automotive News. Drivers who don’t know about recalls may continue to drive unsafe vehicles and suffer serious injuries as a result – as many experienced San Diego car accident attorneys have seen.

One of the changes requires automakers to implement a function on their websites that allows customers to search for any recalls affecting their vehicle by inserting the vehicle’s VIN into a search field. The NHTSA has also changed the design standards for recall notices to make them stand out among the vast amounts of other information modern consumers must process.

These changes are intended to make it easier for car owners to learn about recalls and follow instructions for fixing any hidden defects that are brought to their attention. Automakers are already required to provide repairs or replacements free of charge when a defect is the subject of a recall, but many drivers don’t take advantage of the free fixes because they don’t know a recall is going on.

The new requirements are a compromise between the NHTSA’s original demands and the desires of automakers to not change their current policies. Originally, the NHTSA wanted automakers to update the agency daily about pending recalls; however, automakers balked, finding the requirement too expensive. Some automakers, such as Ford, already allow customers to search for recalls by VIN on their websites.
