Over 15.5 Million Vehicles Affected by Recalls in 2011
Over the course of 2011, more than 15.5 million motor vehicles were issued recalls for various reasons by auto manufacturers across the United States. Leading the pack was Honda Motor Co. with 3.9 million vehicles recalled in the U.S., according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) results reported by The Ledger.com.
Although 15.5 million vehicles is a large number for one year, it is actually the lowest amount since 2008. In total, there were 593 recall campaigns in 2011, a decrease from the 648 that occurred in 2010. Additionally, the total amount of vehicles is a large drop from the 20.1 million that were recalled in 2010. The NHTSA reported that Honda recalled 3.9 million vehicles in 2011, a number boosted by the company’s announcement of 876,000 vehicles recalled for air bag problems in December.
Toyota Motor Corp. recalled the second most vehicles with 3.5 million affected by 13 campaigns, although it is a large decrease from 2010’s 7 million vehicles recalled due to accelerator problems. Ford Motor Co. came in third for the year with 3.3 million vehicles during 2011.
