La Mesa Car Accident Occurs when Falling Pipe Nearly Crushes Taxi Cab

A La Mesa traffic accident occurred when a taxi cab was nearly crushed by a falling 25-ton steel pipe at the interchange of SR-125 and I-8 near La Mesa Boulevard and Grossmont Center Drive. The steel pipe was being transported on the ramp from northbound I-125 to westbound I-8 when it struck a vertical support and broke its' chains. The speed and unsecured load caused the pipe to roll over the bridge and drop 75 feet on top of the taxi cab.

The 47 year-old cab driver and his 73 year-old passenger were both injured and were taken to local hospitals to treat their injuries. Both men were expected to survive.

The investigating CHP officers believe the accident was caused by the big rig driver travelling at too fast a rate of speed on the bridge.

Our prayers go out to the cab driver and his passenger and cannot imagine how much they have gone through. Clearly this accident happened due to the carelessness and recklessness of the driver and the shipping company.
