Motorcycle Accident on the San Diego Freeway Kills Man

The Interstate 405, known as the San Diego Freeway, saw a deadly motorcycle accident over the weekend when a 27-year-old man was killed in a collision along the highway.

The victim was Matthew Wekall of Cypress, who had been riding south on the 405 freeway when the accident happened, shortly after 7:40 p.m., just north of Magnolia Street. The accident was said to have involved a car, a sports utility vehicle, and a fixed object. Following the collision, Wekall was taken to Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, and was pronounced dead at 8:32 p.m. at the medical center.

Traffic fatalities in Orange County had steadily been declining, with a reported rate of 14 percent drop in 2008. However, motorcycle deaths rose a staggering 44 percent from the previous year. The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the motorcycle crash, with the concern of the rise of motorcycle fatalities.
