Five People Killed in San Diego Car Accident Along Interstate 5 (I-5)
Five people died on August 4, 2009, when an SUV rolled off of San Diego's Interstate 5 southbound in Mission Viejo and rolled down an embankment and ultimately burst into flames.
The crash had been reported at 10:25 a.m. near the La Paz Road exit, according to CHP Office Gabe Montoya. Initially it was unknown how many died in the fiery wreckage burned from the accident, but it was later confirmed that 5 people were killed.
Witnesses to the accident noted that a tire on the SUV blew out, and caused the driver to lose control. Investigation was still under way as of Thursday, and the exact cause is still not yet known.
What is known, however, is that there were multiple people in the vehicle. The exact number is not known, but the occupants were trapped inside while it burned. No one was able to survive and there were numerous fatalities in the deadly Orange County multi-car accident.
Some other reports note that many inside the car were children, and that the driver had survived the crash initially, but went back into the burning vehicle in an attempt to rescue the other occupants, but was unsuccessful.
