Car Airlifted After San Diego Auto Accident

A brutal car accident in San Diego County so badly damaged the vehicle that it had to be airlifted out of Torrey Pines States Reserve last week by helicopter.. The 1984 Mercedes 300SD had exasperated park officials who did not have financial resources to remove it from the ditch where it's been lodged in one of California's most enviornmentally sensitive nature area.

Multiple agencies collaborated to remove the vehicle, led by the state Parks Department, requiring chains attached to a cable dangling from a Huey helicopter and then lifted a short distance to a remote road in Sorrento Valley. The car had originally flown off of a precipice along North Torrey Pines Road on January 5 when the driver lost control narrowly missing a man walking along the shoulder of the road. It remained lodged 140 feet down a vertical bluff near gold sandstone that faced Interstate 5. The uninsured driver of the car both survived the crash and made it halfway up the cliff by the time rescuers had arrived. The car had remained visible from roadways over a mile away, prompting many to call 911. A supervisor speculated they received about a half-dozen calls daily to emergency responders.

While it seemed easy and low-budget to simply drag the car out of the area, many feared dragging the car out would be too damaging to the natural reserve which has extremely rare wildlife that has not changed for thousands of years.

It is very fortunate that the driver survived the fatal car wreck that took him down an embankment, but avoiding such a wreck in the first place would have been much more settling to all. Please pay careful attention while on the road, often times we are unaware the power we and our vehicles have and how damaging they can be. Safe driving in the best driving.
