DUI Driver Sentenced for Fatal Hit and Run Accident That Killed Young San Diego Boy
A man was sentenced to life in prison by a Florida jury when he stood trial after admitting to smoking crack cocaine before a hit and run auto accident that killed a San Diego boy. The fate was decided within 24 minutes.
Zachary Foster was 3 when he was killed last year in Florida. Zachary's mother Amy, talked to reporters outside the courthouse , saying "Our hearts are broken forever. He'll never know what he took from us. I'm glad justice was served."
The trial was followed in San Diego, where many breathed a sigh of relief when Kenneth Edwards was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Edwards didn't have a driver's license at the time of the car accident, and admitted to drinking and smoking crack before plowing into a yard and crushing Zachary against a parked car. Zachary's mother then saw Edwards get out and take a look. She grabbed him and said "Wait a minute, you can't go!" to which he replied "To hell with you. I'm out of here." Though Edwards drove off, he was eventually caught. Prosecutors used a law similar to the 3-strikes law to win a life sentence for Edwards. Though he did apologize to the family in court, they said the remorse came a year too late.
