Insurance Study Finds Minicars Sacrifice Safety

A study commissioned by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that buyers of so-called minicars, like the Honda Fit, the Toyota Yaris, and the Smart Fortwo, sacrifice safety for the sake of economy and efficiency. You can read the IIHS Safety Report here.

The Report concludes that minicars save fuel due to their lighter curb weight and smaller size, but that the reduced size and weight also increases the likelihood of death and serious injury in a car accident. A IIHS representative states that the increase is "a big effect--it's not small."

You can read more in this New York Times story.

According to the study, minicars are involved in more multiple vehicle and single vehicle car accidents than any class of vehicles other than small cars.

This is one of many car accidents in San Diego County that have recently occurred on the small, 24 mile stretch of Highway 67. Portions of the road have been known by certain lethal nicknames, such as "Blood Alley", due to its windy and hilly disposition that gives way to numerous fatal car and motorcycle accidents yearly. While the cause of this incident is still under investigation, many auto accidents in this area are due to alcohol related offenses, driver fatigue, simple negligence, and the road's sharp turns itself.

Tightened Highway Enforcement Hopes to Lower Fatal San Diego Auto Accidents

SR-67 in East San Diego County has the ability to make one feel as though they have left the city and its sprawling suburbs. The approximately twenty-four miles of road starts from an interchange with Interstate 8 in El Cajon and ends at an interchange with California SR-78 in Ramona is known not only for the winding and mountainous route it takes, but consequently the high incident of auto accidents seen on its scenic back country stretch. Most of these car wreck accidents tend to be fatal.

Since 2006, the 19 fatalities due to car crashes on California Highway 67 include 11 due to drunk driving. Despite the reputation this road has received for car and motorcycle accidents, it has not seemed to affect the attitude of drivers as the death toll remains steadily on its increasing pattern. Top 10 Ways to Fight Fatigue While Driving

Many times, San Diegans drive their cars when they are very tired and before they know it they start nodding off at the wheel. Here are a few tips to make sure that you stay awake on our San Diego roads and freeways:

1. You should remember that, before a long drive, you should try to sleep seven to eight hours the night. If not then you are asking to fall asleep at the wheel.

2. When possible, try not to drive alone. Passengers can keep conversation up with you to keep you awake and help drive as well. Avoid long drives at night.

3. Avoid late night drives. The glare of the lights may cause a hypnosis sensation to come over you.

4. Keep your body involved in the driving by not using cruise control, listening to music, and keeping the air temperature cool in your car.

5. Check your posture and make sure that you are seated correctly. If you feel too comfortable, you will tend to fall asleep.

6. About every two hours make sure that you stop at a gas station just to walk around or do some sort of a physical workout. Get your blood pumping through your body again.

7. Try to eat a snack every once in awhile to fight hunger. Hungry people tend to sleep.

8. During the day, you should wear sunglasses to fight the glare.

9. Break the monotony by listening to different radio stations, turning the radio on and off, talk to yourself, etc. Keep your mind active.

10. If none of these tactics work, then there is only one thing to do: sleep. Find a well lit area to park where you can sleep. Even a 20 minute nap will make a difference.

San Diego Jury Acquits Driver in 2007 San Diego County Car Accident

Almost two years ago, on May 7, 2007, Ronald Boord of Ramona crossed into oncoming traffic with his pickup truck. He collided head-on with a Hummer being driven by Kris Coxsey of Warner Springs. Boord then went on to hit two more vehicles, causing a multi-vehicle car crash on SR-67 in Poway. Boord was on his way back from the Poway Wal-Mart at about 10 a.m., while Coxsey was on her way to visit her mother in San Diego from Warner Springs. You can read more about this San Diego County car accident in this SignOnSanDiego.com story.

Kris Coxsey's back was broken due to the crash and Ronal Boord suffered numerous injuries.

At the time of the crash, Ronal Boord was taking methadone and also had hip and ankle problems, making it difficult for him to operate a motor vehicle. However, it was initially thought by investigators that Boord had attempted to commit suicide since there was no evidence of him attempting to brake or perform evasive action once he crossed the double-yellow line. This suspicion was then heightened when investigators learned of previous incident where Boord emptied a .45-caliber handgun into his van parked outside of his Encinitas apartment. Boord begged SWAT officers to kill him while he held the gun to his head for about three hours. The jury, however, never learned about this incident because investigators thought that there was no way to prove what had motivated Boord. Instead, Boord was faced with a reckless driving charge and up to 11 years in prison.
