The teenager, Brittany Grell, 18, of Escondido and a 21-year-old occupant were driving southbound on Interstate 15 shortly before 11 p.m. when their Chrystler Sebring swerved to the right, moved back to the left, and skidded into the center median before overturning and rolling several times. Both Grell and the other woman were ejected from the vehicle.
Grell was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics took the woman via ambulance to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of her serious injuries.
Witnesses report seeing a coyote on the freeway around the time of the accident, although it was unclear whether a coyote caused the vehicle to swerve.
